Lerai’s Rescue Story
We know little about Lerai’s past, except that she was found alone at only 3 months old in Sosian Ranch region. There were no elephant herds spotted for days. A scared, anxious little calf was then brought to us at Reteti on the 15th of July 2020. Her background is still a big mystery to us all, but her patient, determined, gentle nature we believe was the driving force that kept her safe until she was rescued by the team.
Lerai Today
Lerai’s distinctive graceful nature easily separates her from the rest of the nursery group. She loves exploring on her own, and will often stay behind at the sanctuary when the herd goes on bush walks. When it comes to feeding times, she walks in slowly and patiently waits for her turn to drink. She is usually last to drink, and very happy to do so.
She quietly observes the herd and is sociable with everyone. Her gentle energy is a wonderful complement to the boisterous characters she lives amongst at Reteti. She has a soft spot for the keepers and particularly loves Lemarash. Lemarash took care of her from the moment she arrived at Reteti, and she hasn’t left his side since.

We are a US-based 5013C and therefore your monthly donation is 100% tax deductible for customers in the USA. Additionally, multiple adoptions of individual orphans enable us to cover the costs of caring for all the orphans at Reteti. Your contribution will help us cover the cost of milk, the keepers, veterinary cost and other essentials your your orphan needs.
Your monthly donation will support the rehabilitation and care of Lerai on her journey back to the wild.
