Sarara’s Rescue Story

Sarara came to us as a 4 month old calf after being rescued from a well located just 45minutes from Reteti. As a result of the ongoing drought in Northern Kenya, the wells which the elephants drink from become deeper as the water level drops, and this is how Sarara ended up in a well. The Samburu warriors who visited the well the next morning to get water for their livestock, found the calf and notified Reteti.

Lchurai, who was one of the older females in the Reteti Herd, was Sarara’s surrogate mother and she took him under her watchful eye. It was incredible to witness their bond and relationship. Lchurai was released in May 2020 along with Shaba. But, by this time, Sarara was well integrated in the herd. He became best friends with Lemorijo, and these two love to play - testing their strength on each other. They’re still best friends today! Sarara also loves to makes a noise by sucking his trunk in a special way (bless him!) and he does it so often, that Lomunyak now does it too.!

Since Sarara is from our home range - here in Namunyak Conservancy - we believe he will meet his family again here one day.
