Sitiin’s sudden and tragic passing

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Sitiin has has tragically passed away and has joined her mama in heaven. Typing these words still feels surreal, and we’re sure reading them feels just as surreal.

It feels like just yesterday that we returned from the dramatic rescue, walking her off the mountain where she was guarding her mama’s body. In her short time at Reteti, she loved abundantly and taught all of us about grief, loss and healing. Now it’s our turn to follow the example she set for us.

As we are struggling to process the sudden loss, we wrote a letter to her.

Dear Sitiin,

Our hearts still ache after your sudden passing, but we take comfort in the thought that you are now reunited with your mama, who passed away last year. Your reunion must have been a beautiful moment, filled with love and warmth.

We want to express our deepest gratitude for everything you taught us about grief and courage. You faced the loss of your mama with grace and strength, showing us the true depth of an elephant's emotional intelligence.

Through your example, you taught us about the power of connection, the importance of community, and the resilience of the spirit.

We are in awe of the way you lived your life, and we are forever grateful for the lessons you shared with us. The memory of your gentle presence, your curious spirit, and your unwavering courage will stay with us always.

The herd and the keepers at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary will never forget you, Sitiin. You will always be remembered as a beacon of hope and a symbol of the enduring power of love.

Rest in peace, dear Sitiin.

Sitiin passed away from a condition called ‘Mechanical Intestinal Obstruction’. This condition is common among ‘hind-gut fermenters’ like horses and elephants. The onset is very sudden and very rapid and requires immediate, emergency surgery as the torsion of the intestine happens deep within the gut.

Sitiin was rolling around and playing in the mud bath in the boma, when her intestines twisted. Our Veterinarian and keepers were already on site and as soon as they noticed something was wrong they did everything in their capacity to save her life.

Sitiin was loved by everyone; elephants, keepers, and foster parents and followers alike. Her story touched hearts around the world. We will miss her deeply. She will always hold a special place in our hearts and we’ll remember her forever.

Rest in Peace Sitiin
